Biography & Statement

Clive Vosper

I was born in Brighton in 1947 and studied Printmaking and Painting at Brighton Polytechnic in the 1960’s. I returned to Brighton University in 1986 to study for a MA in Fine Art Printmaking.

I have exhibited widely in London and the South East of England, and two solo shows in the USA where I was invited to lecture on my work. I exhibited in the very first Brighton Open House and have continued to be an invited exhibitor over the years, eventually opening my own house for the Worthing Festival for three consecutive years. Following a move to Arundel my partner and I opened our town center house, showing our work during the Arundel Festival.

I now live and work in Chichester West Sussex.

Artist Statement

I make prints, photographs, and drawings and frequently make work that combines these mediums in varying proportions depending on the development of the subject.

It is the subject of landscape that is the starting point for my work. In particular places that show evidence of its ancient history and how humans have used shaped, and exploited it, for living, for death, for ritual or defence and how natural forces over time have changed and distorted this evidence.
I respond to the evident layers of a landscapes history.
I see a correlation between the layers of history in the landscape and the layers that occur through my approach to the process of printmaking and try to develop equivalents in my work.

In my photographs, I try to look at the less obvious, to find a sometimes intimate place, object, quality of light, texture or form that reflects the spirit of the landscape I am traveling.
My aim is to make photographs that have a very personal vision and convey a sense of place and the feelings I experience being there.
